| Release of missionaries held in
Afghanistan raises questions about truthfulness and respect for law of
some "evangelists"

A recent article
in the Dallas Morning News points to some of the questions
that observers have been asking since the release of Dayna Curry and
Heather Mercer after weeks of detention by the Taliban. They were
accused of using their humanitarian activities as a "cover"
for evangelism, which has long been forbidden by the Afghan government.
Some of the questions being asked:
 | Is deception legitimate when it is for the sake of
spreading the Gospel? |
| Is it appropriate to violate the laws of a nation
in which one is a guest? |
| Is evangelism sometimes coercive, when it makes use
of Western wealth and power in a very poor country? |
| Does the Gospel lead us to respect the faiths of
other people, or does it compel us to despise other religions? |

GA actions
ratified (or not) by the presbyteries
A number of the most important actions of the 219th
General Assembly are now being sent to the presbyteries for their
action, to confirm or reject them as amendments to the PC(USA) Book
of Order.
We're providing resources to help inform the
reflection and debate, along with updates on the voting.
Our three areas of primary interest are:

Amendment 10-A,
which would remove the current ban on
lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender persons being considered as
possible candidates for ordination as elder or ministers. |
|
Amendment 10-2,
which would add the Belhar Confession to our Book of
Confessions. |
|
Amendment
10-1, which would adopt the new Form of Government
that was approved by the Assembly. |
